Survey Instrument Technician

Job Summary
Operate total stations, digital and automatic levels, Topcon data collectors, and TDS software to collect field data for survey notes reported to the Surveyor Party Chief. Assist with loading and unloading equipment from the company vehicle while conducting all activities in compliance with Health, Safety & Environmental Management System policies. Attend monthly safety meetings and project toolbox discussions. Maintain on-time attendance and be prepared to travel and stay overnight based on department workload. This full-time role requires working outdoors up to 100% of the time, lifting 50lbs, standing for eight hours, and driving to job sites. Thompson Engineering supports industrial, infrastructure, and community development projects across the Southeast.
Required Qualifications
- Five (5) years verifiable experience in surveying commercial and/or heavy industrial construction stakeout
- working knowledge of GPS software using the Topcon Hyperlite
- High school diploma or equivalent
- valid Driver's License
- TWIC card
- Ability to read and comprehend measurements
- Intermediate math skills which include trigonometry and coordinate geometry
- Ability to communicate effectively with others
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to work in the outside elements of the field up to 100% of the time
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs
- Required to remain standing for a minimum of eight (8) hours per day and walk long distances
- Must be able to bend, stoop and climb on a ladder
- Must be able to drive a company vehicle to and from job sites
- willing to travel to support project needs
- Ability to travel and stay overnight based on the workload of the Survey Department
- On time and consistent attendance
