Job Summary
Ensure room and all surgical items meet sterilization criteria while maintaining a sterile field and safe environment. Prepare rooms and instruments for procedures, assist surgical staff during operations, and clean rooms between cases. Recognize and address sharps and fire safety processes, identify emergency situations, and exercise judgment to respond to critical incidents. Take assigned call and weekends as required for full-time, 40-hour coverage. Advance to Level II or III roles by demonstrating competency in basic procedures and specialty areas such as orthopedics, robotics, neuro, or cardiovascular surgery. Register through DORA in Colorado and obtain National Certification within one year of hire.
Required Qualifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers
- Completion of an accredited Operating Room Technician program
- Graduated from a non-accredited surgical tech program within the past six months
- Two years of scrub tech experience in hospital or military surgical services within the last three years
- Hired for on-the-job training in a rural hospital
- International training equivalent and legally authorized to work in the United States
- Competent in basic procedures or one or more specialty areas/facility case mix
- Able to take assigned call
- Registered through DORA in the state of Colorado
- Must be in good standing
- Prior approval from the Surgical Services Director Council must be obtained before caregivers are moved into this role
- Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy
- Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients
- Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment
- Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items
- Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment
- Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms
- May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time
- Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately
Desired Qualifications
- Active National Certification as an OR Tech in Surgery or Certified Surgical Technologist
- Certification is expected within the timeframe outlined below
- Surgical Technologists who graduated from an accredited program must certify within one year of hire
- Surgical Technologists who have graduated from non-accredited programs or completed on-the-job or military training, need to certify as soon as possible
