Job Summary
Maintain a sterile environment by following surgical asepsis, universal precautions, and preparing operating rooms, equipment, and supplies for procedures. Assist with instrument, sponge, and sharps counts while ensuring equipment functions safely and adhering to policies for handling, cleaning, storing, and disposing of instruments. Support patient care through positioning, transport, specimen handling, and emergency response, recognizing problems and communicating pertinent information to the responsible RN. Help maintain infection control, environmental safety, and operating room readiness, including assisting with surgeon preference updates, supply management, staff orientation, and on-call emergencies. Use computerized information systems in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
- High School Graduate, or equivalent, with proof of previous experience as a Surgical Technologist-a cumulative period of two years
- Graduated from a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization, or in the process of obtaining his or her certified surgical technologist credentials
- Completed a military surgical technology program
- BLS Certification required (can be obtained after hire)
- Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with other patient care staff, patients and physicians
- Work effectively with other nursing staff, patients, physicians, and members of other departments under the direction of an RN
- Recognize patient care problems, react appropriately in patient care emergencies and communicate pertinent information to the responsible RN
- Ability to complete basic mathematical calculation
- Dependable, alert and adaptable to change in situations; exercises safe judgment in decision making
