Job Summary
Facilitates physician’s performance of invasive, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures by handling instruments, supplies, and equipment, maintaining the sterile field, and assisting the surgeon in the operating room. Responsibilities include passing instruments, anticipating needs, performing counts with the circulator prior to incision, preparing sterile dressings, draping, and preparing room turnover. Requires an Associate Degree or Certificate in Surgical Technology and Basic Life Support; certification by the National Board of Surgical Technologists or Association of Surgical Technologists is preferred. The role operates within Adventist Health at St. Helena/Napa Valley facilities and emphasizes patient safety, sterile technique, and collaboration with the surgical team.
Required Qualifications
- Associate Degree or Certificate of Program Completion in Surgical Technology: Required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from approved vendor per AH policy: Required
- Verifies surgery to be performed with consent forms and brings patient to assigned operating room
- Passes instruments to surgeon during procedure
- Anticipates surgeon's needs of additional supplies
- Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed
- Prepares sterile dressings
- Secures dressings after incision closure
- Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure
- Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure
- Helps drape sterile field
- Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization
- Assists other members of team with cleaning of room for turnover
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned
