Job Summary
Provide service and support before, during, and after surgical procedures. Ensure the presence and proper arrangement of surgical equipment and supplies in the operating room for each operation. Assist the surgeon during the procedure as allowed by professional and legal standards. Clean the operating room after the operation, ensuring proper routing of equipment and used material. Maintain a strict adherence to policies regarding sterile field maintenance and apply principles of asepsis to provide optimal patient care. Anticipate the needs of the surgeon based on knowledge of various surgical procedures and surgical equipment. This role is part of Backus Hospital, the primary healthcare source for Eastern Connecticut, which operates as the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties.
Required Qualifications
- Completion of a CAAHEP-accredited surgical technician program
- Certification through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
- Ability to obtain CST certification within 6 months
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Strict adherence to policies and regulations regarding maintenance of sterile field
- Knowledge and practice of basic care and patient safety concepts
- Application of the principles of asepsis in a manner that provides optimal patient care
- Excellent interpersonal/communication skills
- Knowledge of name and function of surgical equipment and instrumentation
- Knowledge of various surgical procedures with the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon
- Maintains certification by participating in continuing education activities
- Availability for rotating weekends and holidays
