Job Summary
Prepares and maintains medical equipment for surgical procedures by setting up instruments, sterile drapes, and solutions before operations. Performs pre-operative patient preparations including skin washing, shaving, and disinfecting incision sites, then transports patients to the operating room and positions them on the table. Passes instruments to surgeons, holds retractors, cuts sutures, and counts sponges, needles, and supplies. Operates sterilizers, lights, suction machines, and diagnostic equipment while monitoring vital signs and assisting with sterile gowning. After surgery, transfers patients to recovery and cleans and restocks the operating room. Requires certification, CPR skills, and experience in a related field.
Required Qualifications
- A graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program
- Must be certified to perform CPR
- 0-2 years of clinical experience in a related field
- Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients in the center
- Must demonstrate the knowledge of the principle of growth and development of the life span
- Must demonstrate the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his/her age specific needs
- Must demonstrate the ability to provide the care needed as described in the center's policies and procedures
- Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills in the nursing process
- Must demonstrate the ability to utilize recognized channels of communication
- Must demonstrate the ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients, co-workers, and other health team members
- Ability to be on your feet for long periods
- Ability to lift or turn disabled patients
- Ability to concentrate for periods of up to four hours
- Ability to communicate verbally both in person and on the telephone
- Ability to use computer keyboard and to view a computer monitor
