Job Summary
Assists nursing and surgical staff with direct patient care activities in the operating room environment. Performs technical duties relating to scrub personnel, including smooth, precise, and efficient reaction to all situations. Applies knowledge of surgical asepsis when arranging and opening sterile packs, instruments, and other sterile supplies. Checks cases, gathers supplies and equipment, and ensures availability and proper functioning. Monitors aseptic technique of the surgical team and identifies breaks in sterility and corrects them as needed. Ensures proper collection, identification, and delivery of specimens according to hospital policy. Performs needle, sponge, and instrument counts according to hospital policy and procedure. Prepares and assists in the application of sterile surgical dressings, immobilizers, and casts as ordered by the surgeon. Sets up back table and Mayo stand, hands surgical instruments to the surgical team, and anticipates needs throughout the procedure. Takes initiative to begin room turnover, restocks supplies, and returns equipment to proper storage following the surgical procedure.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Completion of an OR Technician training program or equivalent
- Minimum 1 year of experience
- Must be a Certified Surgical Technician by the Association of Surgery Technologists, NBSTSA
- Current BLS Healthcare Provider Certification required with American Heart Association
