Job Summary
Scrub and assist surgeons during ophthalmology procedures by assembling instruments, verifying equipment function, and applying aseptic technique. Monitor intra-operative needs, perform sponge and instrument counts, and safely dispense medications based on patient age and weight. Prepare patients for surgery through positioning and skin prep, while assisting with patient transportation and post-procedure room cleaning and sterilization. Maintain strict infection control policies, report equipment malfunctions, and properly identify and preserve specimens. Ensure effective communication with the charge nurse, physicians, and other staff throughout the surgical process.
Required Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Completion of a Surgical Technologist program or on the job training related to healthcare
- Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers within 30 days of hire
- Adherence to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program
- Compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards
- Ability to scrub and assist with various surgical procedures in all specialties
- Ability to stock supplies, clean, and perform other duties as requested
- Ability to ensure effective communication between self, charge nurse, patient, other staff, physicians, and other hospital departments
- Ability to apply and monitor the principles of aseptic technique throughout the intra-operative period
- Ability to perform sponge, needle and instrument count according to policy and procedure
- Ability to identify, label and dispense medications and/or solution safely with consideration to age and weight
- Ability to anticipate, plan for, and respond to the needs of the surgeon
- Ability to maintain established department, unit, and hospital policies, procedures, and objectives regarding performance improvement, safety, environmental, and infection control
- Ability to assist in housekeeping duties and cleanliness of department
- Ability to assist in stocking of operating rooms after procedures are completed
- Ability to assist surgical team with patient preparation such as positioning, skin prep, equipment, and supplies, as directed, and with consideration to age specific/developmental variables
- Ability to assist in transportation of patients when directed, maintaining age appropriate safety measures
- Ability to clean, decontaminating, and sterilization of equipment and instruments
- Ability to report malfunctioning equipment to the appropriate people
- Ability to confine and contain sources of contamination
- Ability to properly identify and preserve specimens
- Ability to participate in the evaluation of new supplies, equipment and/or instruments
- Ability to accept reasonable work assignments
- Ability to behave in a professional and cooperative attitude
- Ability to be accountable for personal conduct and promote good working relationships among staff and other departments
- Ability to utilize available resources to keep current in practice
- Ability to perform activities in an organized and timely manner
