Job Summary
Assist the surgical team before, during, and after operative procedures by preparing rooms with instruments, sutures, and equipment as outlined on physician preference cards. Perform counts of sponges, needles, and instruments with the circulator prior to surgery and before incision closure. Pass instruments to the surgeon, prepare sterile dressings, and help in draping the sterile field while maintaining the highest standard of sterile technique. Identify emergencies and apply established procedures in a calm and efficient manner. Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization and assist with terminal cleanup of the room. Demonstrate proficiency in using surgical instruments and operating room equipment including electrocautery machines, suction, and microscopes.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Active Surgical Technician/Technologist certification
- BLS certification
- Surgical Technician experience
- Manual dexterity
- Knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology
- Knowledge of Medical Terminology
- Knowledge of Care and Handling of specimens
- Knowledge of Environmental safety
- Knowledge of Cost containment
- Knowledge of Surgical Complications
- Knowledge of Instrumentation
- Knowledge of Sutures
- Knowledge of Solutions
- Knowledge of Prosthetics
- Knowledge of Principles of asepsis and sterile technique
- Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to work part of the call schedule
- Ability to be within a 30-minute timeframe from the hospital while on call
Desired Qualifications
- Surgical Technician experience
- Active Surgical Technician/Technologist certification
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
