Job Summary
Surgical Pathology Technician role supporting pathologists and Pathologists’ Assistants in anatomic pathology, performing gross description and preparation of surgical biopsy specimens for microscopic evaluation, handling autopsy-related tasks, managing specimens in LIS, and assisting with autopsies and morgue operations. Responsibilities include specimen accessioning with bar-coded labeling, coordinating with funeral homes and families, maintaining accurate records, replenishing supplies, equipment maintenance, and training pathology residents and students. Requires an Associate’s degree in a laboratory sciences field (or a Bachelor’s in biology/health sciences with related hospital-lab experience), familiarity with medical terminology, LIS experience, strong communication skills, ability to lift up to 50 lbs, and compliance with biosafety standards; on-site daylight shifts with rotating weekends across multiple UPMC campuses.
Required Qualifications
- Associate's degree in a laboratory science OR Bachelor's degree in biology or related health sciences
- 2 years of hospital laboratory experience (if Associate's degree) OR 1 year of hospital laboratory experience (if Bachelor's degree)
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Laboratory information system experience (LIS) preferred
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups
- Ability to move throughout facility; lifting up to 50 lbs
- Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: Act 34
- On-site, day shift with rotating weekends; no holiday requirement
- Experience with gross description and specimen handling; accessioning with bar coded labels
- Experience with autopsy procedures and morgue maintenance
- Training pathology residents and pathology assistants students
- Documentation and clerical/computer entry duties in LIS
- Proficiency with voice recognition software for documentation
- Adherence to regulatory and safety standards regarding biohazard materials
