Job Summary
As a Surgical Assistant at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital, assist with critical procedures and tasks related to the surgical team, anticipate the surgeon’s needs, ensure sterile technique and infection-control practices, prepare for procedures by verifying equipment and patient positioning, assist in moving and positioning the patient, select imaging references, insert Foley catheter, drape patients, assist during the procedure by retracting tissue, maintain hemostasis, use appropriate instrumentation and electrocautery, place ties or ligatures, and close wound layers. Maintain sterile field, manage drainage, dressings, and assist with resuscitation as directed by the surgeon. Requires an Associate’s degree from an accredited Surgical Assistant program and certification (CSFA/CSA/SA-C) within one year of hire, plus BLS; preferred ACLS/ALS. The role involves lifting and assisting with patient positioning and theatre equipment; operates in a fast-paced operating room environment with team-based care.
Required Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree Graduate of a formal Surgical Assistant program
- Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting
- Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) through the National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants OR Surgical Assistant Certified (SA-C) through the American Board of Surgical Assistants within one year of hire
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
- Two years of perioperative practice in an acute care facility
