Supervisor of Strategic Advocacy

Job Summary

Manage the Strategic Advocacy team to implement systems change through community building, policy reform, and coalition development. Build external relationships with public officials and stakeholders to advance legislative change in Springfield while supervising the Policy Manager and Outreach Coordinator. Lead annual policy agenda creation, draft communications for campaigns, and facilitate strategic convenings to effect local, statewide, and national policy shifts. Provide coaching, performance feedback, and professional development for direct reports while monitoring departmental budgets and ensuring compliance with funder reporting requirements. Collaborate with the Director and cross-departmental supervisors to sustain an integrated advocacy model and ensure timely progress on all strategic initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a master's degree in public administration, public policy, community organizing, law, or related field
  • 6 years or more of professional experience in a nonprofit organization with a demonstrated success in a leadership role
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience in policy development, community organizing, or similar with significant expertise in criminal legal system and community engagement activities
  • Expertise or familiarity with a broad range of criminal legal system issues, including racial justice, the impact of incarceration, permanent punishments, overlapping civil legal issues; and with litigation, the courts, the American legal system, and/or the legislative and political process at the local, state, and/or federal level
  • Proven experience managing multiple full-time direct report and working collaboratively with a leadership team
  • Possess knowledge of government policy making, legislative processes, and base-building efforts
  • Must be able to handle high levels of mental stress
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds
  • Must have the ability to work a flex schedule to accommodate events in the evenings and on some weekends
  • Must be able to travel to Springfield during legislative sessions
  • Ability to travel to community outreach events throughout the city of Chicago
  • Consistent access to transportation is required for this position
  • Must be able to work in an open office setting with moderate noise levels
  • Must have adequate internet access to work from home
  • Must have reliable internet access to work remotely
  • Must be able to communicate clearly
  • Must be able to understand the speech of another person
  • Must be able to use hands and fingers to type, handle, or feel and reach
  • Must be able to stand and walk
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds

Desired Qualifications

  • J.D. preferred, and/or deep knowledge of statute construction and interpretation
