Job Summary
Conduct and oversee daily lifesaving program functions, including animal intake, feeding, cleaning, enrichment, transport, and medicating housed or transported animals. Provide day-to-day leadership through coaching, scheduling, hiring, onboarding, and training staff and volunteers while managing supply inventory, storage, and emergency communications. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess animal capacity, determine lifesaving priorities, and implement strategies that increase placement opportunities. Recruit, train, and retain volunteers to expand program capacity and serve as a media ambassador for community partnerships. Perform euthanasia for program animals when necessary, adhering to medical protocols and ethical standards. Work weekends, evenings, and nights with rotating on-call responsibilities to support the no-kill mission.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- 1-3 years' experience leading teams, supervising staff, or equivalent work experience leading volunteers and implementing new programs
- 1-2 years' experience working in animal welfare in a shelter environment with shelter medicine, foster programs or veterinary medicine
- Strong communications skills: written, verbal, organizational, and presentation skills
- Ability to work with, leash, kennel, walk, and handle cats and dogs, including those with health and/or behavior conditions/concerns
- Ability to identify and speak to medical and behavioral characteristics of dogs and cats
- Strong interpersonal skills, a team player, personable, professional, and able to get along with people from different backgrounds
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with well-developed organization skills
- Resourceful, adaptable, get-it-done attitude
- Initiative to assist in any area or process
- Problem solving, seeking answers independently and enthusiastically
- Flexibility to persist until goals are achieved
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products
- Familiarity with shelter software/animal management software
- Must be able to routinely lift 40 pounds
- Ability to perform daily strenuous activity including lifting, carrying, kneeling, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning, bending, and standing for extended periods
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks for extended periods of time including typing, sitting, walking, arm, and hand motion
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions including extreme heat and cold
- Exposure to dogs, cats and other animals of all sizes, temperaments, and medical status
- Availability for weekends, evenings, nights, holiday work, and rotating on-call responsibilities
- After-hours flexibility to monitor a designated phone line for urgent foster care, staff, or volunteer-related issues
- Valid work authorization that does not now and/or will not in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the U.S.
Desired Qualifications
- Additional education in animal welfare, leadership, animal related programs, or related field
- Experience facilitating trainings and presenting to groups
- Bilingual or multilingual skills
