Superintendent- HVAC Commissioning (Traveling)

Job Summary
Direct and supervise all daily field commissioning activities, leading technicians, subcontractors, and vendors through HVAC, plumbing, and process piping startup. Execute commissioning plans while coordinating manpower, work assignments, and equipment verification with manufacturers and controls contractors. Verify systems are operational before testing, identify deficiencies, troubleshoot issues, and maintain punch lists and documentation. Conduct startup safety meetings, ensure compliance with lockout/tagout procedures, and support owner demonstrations and final turnover. Submit accurate records for project closeout and mentor field personnel on best practices. Requires extensive travel to industrial and manufacturing sites, including working at heights and in noisy environments.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in mechanical construction, HVAC, plumbing, process piping, controls, startup, or commissioning
- Minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience leading field operations on large-scale construction projects
- Extensive experience with equipment startup, testing, balancing, controls integration, and system commissioning
- Thorough understanding of construction sequencing, field operations, startup procedures, and integrated building systems
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, P&IDs, equipment submittals, control diagrams, and sequences of operation
- Strong troubleshooting, leadership, organizational, and communication skills
- Experience coordinating subcontractors, equipment manufacturers, and specialty vendors during commissioning activities
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Procore, Bluebeam, and construction management software
- OSHA 30 certification
- Ability to travel extensively to assigned project sites
- Ability to work at heights — including ladders, scaffolds, lifts, platforms, mezzanines, and elevated structures up to and exceeding 100 feet
- Ability to work around moving equipment — such as forklifts, cranes, aerial lifts, skid steers, and other heavy machinery
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks — including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, kneeling, crawling, climbing, and reaching
- Ability to maintain situational awareness in dynamic, noisy, and high‐hazard environments
- Ability to use required PPE including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, fall protection, and respiratory protection when applicable
- Ability to work in confined or restricted spaces as required by project scope
- Ability to operate or use hand and power tools safely and effectively
- Ability to follow safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, and hazard‐control measures
- Ability to communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and equipment operators using verbal instructions, radios, and hand signals
- Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 50 lbs frequently
- Ability to work on uneven terrain including dirt, gravel, mud, rebar mats, and unfinished surfaces
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs repeatedly throughout the workday
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch to perform installation, repair, or inspection tasks
- Ability to perform repetitive motions including gripping, twisting, hammering, and tool operation
- Ability to use full hands, arms, legs, and balance to safely navigate job sites and perform tasks
- Ability to have visual and auditory acuity sufficient to identify hazards, read instructions, and communicate in high‐noise environments
- Ability to maintain alertness and awareness for long periods
- Ability to recognize and avoid hazards including fall hazards, electrical hazards, pinch points, and equipment movement
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately
- Ability to make quick, safe decisions in changing conditions
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team depending on task needs
Desired Qualifications
- Technical degree, apprenticeship, or trade certification
- Commissioning certification (CxA, CCP, CBCP, QCxP, or equivalent)
