Job Summary
Review lesson plans and schedules, then teach the outlined lessons while maintaining established classroom routines and procedures. Consult with administrators or grade level teachers to clarify assignments, and grade written work not included in lesson plans. Assume responsibility for a positive classroom climate, promote positive interactions among students, and comply with all school division policies. Complete the Substitute Assessment Form upon departure. Submit a physician's certificate regarding communicable tuberculosis and pass required criminal background checks. Requires a high school diploma or GED, or two years of paraprofessional experience at Harrisonburg City Public Schools. Long-term substitutes need a valid Virginia teaching license.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of high school diploma or GED certificate
- Previously worked in Harrisonburg City Public Schools for at least 2 years as a paraprofessional
- Valid Virginia teaching license
- Recent (within twelve months) certificate signed by a licensed physician stating the absence of communicable tuberculosis
- Pass a criminal review by the State Police Department and Virginia Department of Social Services/Child Protective Services background check
- Emotionally mature, objective, and sensitive to people and their concerns
- Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain good working relationships with students, families and co-workers
- Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments to improve instructional practices
- Proficiency in the use of a variety of office equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office, email, and information system applications as well as working knowledge of cloud based applications such as Google drive
- Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and the community
- Proficiency in business English: spelling, grammar, and spoken language

- Completed the Child Abuse and Neglect: Recognizing, Reporting and Responding for Educators training module
