Substation Technician

Job Summary
Test, repair, and maintain all types of single phase and three phase transformers, reclosers, regulators, and capacitor controls. Perform monthly and quarterly inspections of substations and down line equipment, including infrared scanning and oil sample collection. Safely operate company vehicles, bucket trucks, and heavy equipment while working near voltages up to 230,000 volts. Assist with environmental compliance, oil spill cleanup, and the restoration of power outages by locating underground faults. Maintain accurate record keeping and support apparatus shop functions as needed. Primarily field work with irregular hours, on-call availability, and requirements for a valid Class A commercial driver's license.
Required Qualifications
- High school graduate
- Associate degree in pre-engineering, electric studies, or related program
- Completion of an electrical apprentice program
- 5 years of specific job-related experience
- Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Georgia commercial driver's license (Class A)
- DOT certification
- Ability to safely work near voltages up to 230,000 volts
- Ability to safely operate and conduct work using a bucket truck on energized equipment
- Demonstrated commitment to safe work and adherence to safety policies
- Knowledge of different types of transformers, reclosers and other substation equipment
- Ability to troubleshoot complex equipment failures
- Ability to reason analytically and relate theoretical concepts to actual needs
- Demonstrated ability to interpret electrical diagrams, schematics and blueprints
- Demonstrated computer skills utilizing windows-based programs
- Ability to safely operate underground fault locating equipment, a tractor and other heavy equipment, e.g., track hoe, skid-steer, etc.
- Ability to gain an understanding of North Georgia EMC policies and procedures, environmental regulations and National Electric Safety Code Requirements
- Ability to climb, balancing, stooping, pushing, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting
- Ability to lift small objects with the fingers, grasping, talking, hearing
- Visual acuity in machine operation
- Body weight of less than 275 pounds
- Flexibility to work irregular hours for assignment completion
- Ability to work during emergency situations
- Availability during inclement weather
- Flexibility to be on call, as needed
