Substation Project Engineer

Job Summary

Manage high-voltage electrical substation projects by driving schedules and budgets, supervising multidisciplinary teams, and creating or modifying design documents including one-line diagrams and electrical plans. Coordinate project activities with customers, vendors, and management while ensuring compliance with engineering standards such as NEC, NESC, IEEE, and ANSI. Apply engineering software for ground grid design, relay coordination, transformer sizing, load flow, and short circuit studies. Take personal responsibility for work quality and address project deviations promptly. Travel overnight for trainings and meetings as required. Work indoors primarily with occasional outdoor exposure and extended hours including weekends as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent degree from an accredited university
  • Must be a licensed Professional Engineer
  • Must be able to obtain a license within eighteen months of date of hire if registered in a state other than where the engineer will practice
  • A minimum of 6 years of direct experience and proven knowledge in high voltage (138kV and above) electrical substation engineering and design
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of high voltage electrical substation components and their functions at 138kV and above
  • Extensive knowledge of AC/DC fundamentals
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of three-phase power systems, per-unit mathematics, and symmetrical components
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of engineering standards including NEC, NESC, IEEE, and ANSI
  • Strong knowledge of design documents and drawings necessary to complete a project
  • Experience supervising a project team in a technical work environment
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Must maintain an acceptable driving record throughout employment
  • Must be able and willing to travel overnight for trainings and/or meetings as required (10%)
  • Working extended hours, including weekends, may be required periodically
  • Must be able to endure prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer for a minimum of 8 hours a day
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at a time
  • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis without current or future visa sponsorship
