Substation Planner III

Job Summary

Plan and schedule all activities for substation construction and maintenance projects, developing detailed work execution strategies and sequencing complex tasks including equipment outages, temporary facility installations, and clearance requirements. Lead planning discussions for projects of varying complexity while coordinating with Transmission, Distribution, Generation, Engineering, and Project Management teams. Review isolation procedures, critique sequencing plans, and provide peer-level technical support for maintenance and construction work. Evaluate clearance boundary requirements, identify operational risks, and troubleshoot technical issues impacting project execution. Utilize engineering drawings, procedures, and equipment databases to support planning, ensure compliance with NERC standards, and maintain accurate project documentation. Work independently with minimal supervision to lead planning efforts and support other planners within the organization.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of experience performing transmission line and/or substation maintenance, construction, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, or operations work
  • Experience planning and coordinating substation maintenance and/or construction activities
  • Hands-on experience working in and around electrical substations
  • Proven ability to independently plan and schedule complex maintenance and construction activities
  • Strong knowledge of substation equipment, including: Power transformers, Voltage regulators, Circuit breakers, Disconnect switches, Instrument transformers, Bus systems, Related substation apparatus
  • Knowledge of above-grade and below-grade substation facilities and structures
  • Understanding of equipment installation, maintenance, operation, commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Knowledge of outage planning, switching and tagging processes, and clearance management
  • Familiarity with engineering drawings and equipment database systems
  • Ability to read and interpret: Technical drawings, Construction documents, Procedures, Clearance documentation
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • Demonstrated leadership and team coordination skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
  • Travel to project sites as required using a personal vehicle (mileage reimbursed)
