Substation Physical Designer / Engineer

Job Summary
Collect and analyze data from physical work sites, surveys, vendor drawings, and schematics to support substation structural drafting and design activities. Review drawing accuracy, dimensions, and material quantities while escalating technical issues as appropriate. Work with cross-functional teams to execute project phases, develop construction work packages, and prepare detailed construction drawings including high voltage equipment layouts and wiring diagrams. Ensure plans adhere to city, state, and federal regulations, and prepare Bills of Material and construction estimates. Conduct field visits to collect measurements and existing utility data, then submit completed construction packages for review and approval. Coordinate with engineering teams and utility personnel to meet project-specific requirements.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting/Design or Certification
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent technical degree)
- Minimum of 3+ years of experience in utility substation design
- Understanding of substation design from 500kv to 4kV
- Working knowledge of NESC (National Electrical Safety Code) requirements
- Understanding of single-phase and three-phase power systems, transformers, conductors, and pole configurations
- Demonstrated experience supporting substation Engineering scope on utility or power infrastructure projects
- Familiar with engineering and design support principles, practices, processes, methods, and techniques
- Familiar with relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements
- Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies
- Able to uphold workplace safety and ability to abide by UtilliCo's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek
- Knowledge of industry standards and practices
- Familiarity with BIM (Building Information Modeling) processes
- Strong understanding of engineering principles and construction methods
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Able to produce Plans, Sections and Elevation Views
- Experience with the Preparation of Bill of Materials, and Specifications
- Ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering documents
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Knowledge of building codes and regulations
- Authorization to work in the United States without the need for employer‐sponsored visa sponsorship now or in the future
- Experience with BlueBeam software
- Familiarity with computer-aided drafting software, such as AutoCAD and/or MicroStation
- Capable of producing plans, section and elevation views, assembling shop drawings, and preparing bills of materials
- Excellent research and evaluation skills with analytical mindset
- Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to technical and non-technical audiences
- Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, principles, spreadsheets, and tools
- Experience using drafting and design software such as: AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical(Revit, SDS), 3D CAD, MicroStation
- Proven experience in Microsoft Office Applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point)
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and communication abilities
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple projects and deadlines
- Valid driver's license
- Candidates must be at least 21 years old due to insurance requirements
- Must possess a satisfactory driving record
- Ability to travel occasionally for field visits and client meetings
- Background check and drug screening
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent technical degree), preferred
- 6+ years of experience working with electric utilities or utility consulting firms preferred
- Knowledge of MicroStation is a plus
- 3D CAD experience preferred
