Job Summary

Assess and manage health-related conditions for designated students with high medical needs, implementing individual health plans and special emergency services in accordance with provider orders. Provide direct 1:1 care while riding the bus to and from school, collaborating with families, healthcare providers, and classroom staff to coordinate health management. Document school health services and activities manually and electronically, facilitate Medicaid reimbursement procedures, and participate in Child Study, Student Assistance, and IEP team meetings. Maintain confidentiality and ensure appropriate appearance while working in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.

Required Qualifications

  • RN with Baccalaureate degree
  • CPR certification
  • Current Iowa Nursing License
  • Current LPN Iowa Nursing License
  • Ability to lift and/or physically manipulate students in order to provide appropriate care (tracheal care, g-tube, seizure precautions) and/or in cases of emergency (CPR, Heimlich maneuver, etc.)
  • Ability to lift up to 80 pounds to waist level (with assistance)
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds to shoulder level
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds above head level
  • Ability to travel (drive) between attendance centers
  • Must be able to *Frequently work with interruptions during a work shift
  • Must be capable of carrying a wheelchair, other mobility devices, equipment or supplies weighing up to 50 pounds for a distance of 20 feet
  • Must be capable of carrying a wheelchair, other mobility devices, equipment or supplies weighing up to 50 pounds up 10 steps
  • Must be willing to come into contact with body fluids such as urine, blood and oral secretions and contagious diseases such as flu and the common cold
  • Ability to hear, speak, see, and carry out the routine duties of the position
  • Ability to perform basic nursing functions and duties, including first aid and basic emergency care
  • Ability to use and manage the health services database, record accurately services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports, activities, health care plans, accommodations and medical interventions
  • Ability to make independent and timely nursing decisions and to triage
  • Knowledge of state requirements and laws pertaining to health services delivery and disease control
  • Knowledge of school health law, special education legislation and services and the scope of school nursing practice
  • Ability to follow health plan in accordance with IHP and care providers orders
  • Ability to develop, manage and evaluate school health programs
  • Ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations
  • Ability to secure the cooperation and respect of students, staff and faculty
  • Ability to elicit needed information and to maintain effective working relationships
  • Knowledge of case finding case management and advocacy
  • Knowledge of program management, including personnel supervision
  • Knowledge of family theory, assessment and intervention
  • Knowledge of current information and trends in health care; ability to provide leadership related to new initiatives
  • Knowledge of health care delivery systems and the concepts of primary health care
  • Knowledge of contemporary health and psychosocial issues that influence children
  • Networking and collaboration skills
  • Possess ethnic and cultural sensitivity and competence
  • Ability to build trust and maintain confidentiality with students and staff regarding health services issues
  • Strong communication skills
  • Must be able to ride the bus with the student to school and back home
  • Must *Constantly present appropriate appearance and personal cleanliness suited to working in close proximity to school age children and adults
