Student Nurse Clinical Placement

Job Summary

Setup and operate hemodialysis machines under direct supervision of a licensed nurse while supporting the hemodialysis health care team. Escort patients to and from scales, assist with access washing, and monitor vital signs including weight and blood glucose. Perform surface disinfection, internal machine cleaning, and lab preparation, then initiate or terminate treatments on mature fistulas or grafts with preceptor approval. Lead daily huddles, attend care plan meetings, and review medications alongside the preceptor RN. This clinical placement supports FMCNA's Quality Enhancement Program and CQI activities through active participation in process improvement. Students may travel between assigned facilities and attend regional meetings, requiring the ability to lift up to 40 lbs and stand for prolonged periods in a healthcare environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Three quarters of the ADN program
  • Junior year of a BSN program
  • Two years of a nursing school program
  • Other programs require approval from Clinical Services and Education
  • Successfully completed the following as provided by the academic program
  • Infection Control (eLearning)
  • Intro to Basic Dialysis (eLearning)
  • Intro to Water self-study (eLearning)
  • Blood Glucose Monitoring PREP Class
  • Evaluating and Monitoring the Patient PREP Class
  • Foot checks PREP Class
  • Water class PREP Class
  • Must adhere to all facility and FMCNA policies and procedures
  • Must be able to lift and to lower solutions on a frequent basis of up to 30 lbs.
  • Must be able to lift and on an occasional lift basis up to 40 lbs.
  • Must be able to exert up to 15 pounds of force
  • Must be able to bend over
  • Must be able to push and/or pull equipment
  • Must be able to stand for frequent, prolonged periods
  • Must be able to travel between assigned facilities and various locations within the community
  • Must be able to travel to regional, Business Unit and Corporate meetings
  • Must be able to work in a health care facility with moderate noise levels
  • Must be able to be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases/materials
  • Must be able to perform direct patient care
  • Must be able to assist with ambulation
  • Must be able to work under the visual supervision of an RN-P
  • Must be able to attend daily huddles
  • Must be able to attend Care plan meeting
  • Must be able to attend QAI Meeting
  • Must be able to attend POC Meeting
  • Must be able to attend a clinic day in HT
  • Must be able to attend a day at the access center
  • Must be able to observe in Home Therapies
  • Must be able to attend a day at the access center
  • Must be able to work in a drug-free workplace
