Job Summary
The Student Assistant – Beekeeping assists with university apiary operations, performing hands-on care and management of honey bee colonies, hive inspections, seasonal apiary activities (feeding, swarm prevention, splitting colonies, winterization), honey harvesting and labeling, and data collection for research or outreach. The role supports safety and PPE use, helps maintain equipment and facilities, and may assist faculty and staff with demonstrations, classes, and Bee Campus USA initiatives to advance pollinator-focused education and research at Purdue Northwest. Ideal for undergrad/grad students in agriculture, biology, environmental science, entomology, sustainability, or related fields seeking applied experience and opportunities to contribute to coursework, extension programs, and outreach.
Required Qualifications
- Enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student at Purdue Northwest University
- Willingness to work outdoors and around live bees
- Ability to follow safety protocols and work responsibly as part of a team
- Strong dependability, initiative, and attention to detail
- Ability to lift up to 60 lbs with or without reasonable accommodation
- Valid drivers license as it applies to Purdue standards
