Job Summary
Read blueprints and project specifications to determine dimensions and materials for structural framing systems. Select, cut, and weld steel components using SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW techniques, then erect, install, and connect beams, girders, and columns. Rig components for crane lifting and guide positioning while operating fabricating equipment like shears, rollers, and drill presses. Inspect welds and structures to ensure compliance with safety regulations and design specs. Collaborate with engineers and management teams to address field challenges and maintain accurate records of materials and hours.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 2–3 years of experience in structural steel fabrication and erection
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and structural design drawings
- Familiarity with structural steel materials and their properties
- Knowledge of industry safety standards and OSHA regulations
- Competency operating cranes, forklifts, and other heavy machinery used in steel construction
- Physical strength and stamina to handle heavy materials and stand for long periods
- Precise hand-eye coordination and dexterity when working with tools and materials
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work at heights and in varying weather conditions
- Problem-solving skills to address challenges during construction
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality assurance and control
- Willingness to work overtime and weekends as required by project deadlines
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and maintaining required trade licenses or certifications
Desired Qualifications
- Vocational training or apprenticeship in welding or structural steelwork preferred
- Proficiency in SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW welding techniques and relevant certifications, such as AWS D1.1
