Structural/Mechanical Design Engineer

Job Summary

Develop detailed fabrication and assembly drawings and release engineering and manufacture flight hardware for NASA's Space Reactor-1 Freedom project. Collaborate with a team of engineers, structural analysts, outside vendors, and NASA personnel to deliver conceptual, testing, and flight hardware on aggressive schedules. Participate in task meetings, conferences, and status presentations to MSFC and Amentum management as requested. Provide fabrication support to manufacturing personnel while applying statics, structural analysis, and GD&T to fully dimensioned production drawings. Work independently with minimal supervision in an office and laboratory environment, occasionally working overtime to meet schedule deadlines.

Required Qualifications

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering Degree or related field from an ABET accredited institution
  • BS with at least 10 years of experience
  • master's degree with at least 8 years of experience
  • Proficiency in Creo/Pro-Engineer 3-D modeling and 2-D drafting
  • Basic knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (ASME Y14.5M-1994)
  • experience applying GD&T to fully dimensioned production drawings
  • General knowledge and application of Statics and Dynamics
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • have a STAR ID
  • US Citizen
  • ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing
  • ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client
  • travel in the domestic USA (<15%)
  • ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities
  • ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment

Desired Qualifications

  • background in structural fluid system designs
  • concepts derived from various load cases
  • strong statics and structural analysis experience
  • Familiarity with handling CAD (Creo)
  • additional NX knowledge
  • drawing Configuration management processes
  • Working knowledge of typical mechanical design material selections
  • General understanding of manufacturability and design fabrication practices for flight hardware
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
