Job Summary
Structural Engineer with a seismic focus, part-time, as-needed assignments in the Bakersfield/Fresno, CA area. Responsibilities include client-facing on-site seismic risk assessments, ASCE-41 Tier 1 reports, structural surveys, and limited seismic retrofit design; produce detailed reports communicating findings to clients; conduct on-site evaluations, plan reviews, and data collection; perform structural calculations; and support projects across the U.S. with travel to client sites (primarily California). Requires knowledge of modern building codes, seismic provisions, historic code requirements, and experience with report writing and client communications; preferred familiarity with ASCE-41 and earthquake damage loss modeling. Minimum qualifications include a civil/structural engineering degree, 3–7 years of seismic experience, a valid driver’s license, and strong communication and technical skills. The role offers flexible, project-based workload and opportunities to work on high-profile seismic projects in active regions, with emphasis on client-facing site work and reporting.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited university.
- o 3+ years of seismic design and analysis of buildings
- o 2+ years of seismic risk assessment of buildings (experience may overlap with above)
- Preferred: Professional Engineer (PE) license, or on a path to licensure.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Solid understanding of modern building codes, seismic provisions, and historic code requirements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to convey complex technical information to clients.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, inspection tools, smartphone apps, and related software.
- Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently while delivering quality work on time.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently in a flexible, project-based environment.
Desired Qualifications
- Familiarity with ASCE-41 and earthquake damage loss modeling.
- Experience with performance-based seismic design and retrofit strategies.
- Knowledge of historic building types and older code provisions.
