Job Summary
Conduct structural design work for Transmission and Distribution Substation Design Group, producing engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements for structural steel and concrete foundations. Prepare high-quality calculation and design packages using CAD-based tools, analyze new or modified existing substation structures, and perform reinforced concrete foundation design and structural steel analysis as needed. Coordinate with other departments, manufacturers, and vendors to resolve standards and material issues, while providing work direction and oversight for designers and drafters. Perform site visits for pre-construction, during, and post-construction phases, and participate in design review meetings. The position requires approximately 15% travel, reporting to the Forest Park office four days a week, and supports Constructions Services, Substation Construction, and Field Services.
Required Qualifications
- 7-10 years heavy industrial/power plant experience
- Accredited bachelors degree in engineering
- BS in Civil Engineering strongly preferred
- Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certification required
- 3 plus years of experience in structural steel and concrete design
- Experience in industrial and/or commercial structural engineering
- Experience with seismic, wind and vibration analysis
- Prior foundation design experience
- Design experience in transmission structures
- Working knowledge of AISC, ASCE, ACI codes
- Working knowledge of AWS welding standards
- Working knowledge of OSHA codes as it relates to steel design
- Understanding of ANSYS, MathCAD and STAAD Pro
- Understanding of deep foundation design utilizing AllPile, LPILE, FAD Tools
- Experience with analyzing steel connections
- Experience in reinforced concrete design
- Computer skills to be proficient with standard office software applications
- Must be a self-starter and exhibit strong problem-solving skills
- Must demonstrate excellent communication skills (oral & written) and the ability to communicate technical issues simply
- Must work well in a team environment and have the ability to develop and build relationships at all levels
- Interpersonal skills sufficient to build working relationships with peers, internal customers, and the general public
- Must possess effective time management and organizational skills sufficient to manage multiple projects with various priorities and competing deadlines
- Must demonstrate a customer focus with a willingness to meet the needs of our customers and solicit feedback
- Ability to be an effective mentor to others and teach job-related skills
- Some travel (approximately 15%)
- Reporting to the Forest Park office a minimum of four days a week
- Some overnight travel may be required
Desired Qualifications
- BS in Civil Engineering strongly preferred
- Experience with seismic, wind and vibration analysis is a plus
- Prior foundation design experience is a plus
- Design experience in transmission structures is a plus, but not required
