Job Summary

Required Qualifications

• •High School Diploma or GED
• •Valid Driver's License and excellent driving record
• •Some knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety requirements of equipment and machines used
• •Knowledge of basic street maintenance procedures
• •Knowledge of storm water and the maintenance procedures associated with them
• •Ability to follow oral and written instructions
• •Ability to read and write

• •Ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions
• •Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees
• •Ability to operate hand tools and other appropriate equipment
• •Mechanical ability and aptitude

• •Minimum of 3 years' experience in street maintenance or related work, or equivalent amount of training and experience as a non-probationary Tech I
• •Significant knowledge in the hazards & applicable safety requirements of equipment & machines used
• •Significant knowledge of storm water maintenance procedures
• •Ability to direct subordinates
• •Ability to operate the online work order system
• •Considerable experience with tools, equipment, and manual work in street maintenance
• •Valid Class A or B CDL Driver's License and excellent driving record
• •Forklift certificate
• •Lift training
• •Flagger certified
• •Must be able to safely operate, care for and maintain a variety of hand tools and light power equipment such as rakes, shovels, trimmers, edger's, blowers, tamps, saws, etc.
• •Must be able to safely operate small tractors, and small work trucks (sometimes with trailers)
• •Must be able to work with some independence and to utilize skills which require substantial on the job training
• •Must be able to understand catalogues, manuals and manufactures instructions, for tools and equipment
• •Must be able to perform a variety of manual tasks in the maintenance and repair of streets
• •Must be able to perform assigned tasks
• •Must complete additional training or course work in basic leadership skills
• •Must be able to work almost exclusively outdoors, year-round, and in all weather conditions
• •Must be available for occasional evening, weekend, holiday and call-in work
• •Must be able to work during extreme weather events and other emergency situations
• •Must be able to walk, stand, lift, carry, kneel, squat, bend, pull, push and reach constantly
• •Must be able to carry, lift and manipulate materials weighing up to 35lbs regularly
• •Must be able to carry, lift and manipulate materials weighing up to 100lbs occasionally
• •Must be able to climb ladders as well as climbing into and out of/onto and off of various pieces of street keeping equipment, vehicles and equipment trailers
• •Must be able to operate manual hand tools (rakes, shovels, pruners, etc.), light hand power tools (portable hand drills, saws, blowers, etc.), other power tools (chainsaws, hedge trimmers, brush chippers, curb machine, tamps, sod cutter, pavement sprayer, etc.) and small power equipment (Asphalt roller, etc.) for extended periods of time

Desired Qualifications

• •Must be able to apply pre-mixed pesticides and herbicides following proper application and preventive safety instructions
• •Must be able to perform asphalt crack pouring, pothole repair, leveling, grinding, new pavement installs and pavement markings
• •Must be able to perform concrete sidewalk repairs/installations, concrete curb repairs/installs, concrete pad repairs/installs and concrete grinding of any trip hazards
• •Must be able to perform repairs and installs of storm drain lines by cutting pipes, proper connections, laying pipe, manholes, catch basins, and manual digging and tamping
• •Must be able to perform trench excavations, establishing protective barriers, guides heavy equipment
• •Must be able to cut trees and bushes posing a hazard to roadways with manual and automatic cutting tools
• •Must be able to clean and unclog of storm drain culverts and catch basins
• •Must be able to clean vehicles, equipment, and tools; as well as the shop and work sites
• •Must be able to assist in establishing traffic control to include barricades, cones, all signage, & vehicle traffic flagging
• •Must be able to make and install street name signs, traffic control signs, maintenance of all Town owned signs with straightening, cleaning and graffiti removal
• •Must be able to assist with a variety of semi-skilled manual tasks with other Public Works Departments when needed
• •Must be able to assist with setup and tear down of holiday decorations
• •Must be able to assist with salt brine operations of making and placing
• •Must be able to assist in all winter clearing activities of snow, ice and downed trees in roadways and ROW
• •Must be able to perform trimming hazards along sidewalks, edging sidewalks and curbs
• •Must be able to remove various debris from the ROW, i.e. street cans, litter, sticks and pinecones
• •Must be able to perform maintenance & service in minor repairs to various small engine machinery used in street maintenance
• •Must be able to serve as a lead worker in all crew engaged activities
• •Must be able to coach, mentor, train and/or oversee co-workers when operator or supervisor is not present
