Job Summary
Strategic Advocacy Staff Attorney position based in Albany, NY within LASNNY. Lead and coordinate litigation and advocacy efforts to address systemic civil rights issues, collaborate with staff and community partners, draft pleadings and rulemaking comments, supervise litigation from plaintiffs through trial or settlement, mentor colleagues, and engage communities through education and outreach. Responsibilities include developing legal strategies, conducting research, drafting and reviewing legal documents, leading appeals, and coordinating with communications for litigation efforts. Preferred qualifications include experience in civil rights, housing, public benefits, or similar practice areas, appellate experience, legislative experience, bilingual capabilities (Spanish preferred). Must have a JD and NY admission, travel regularly, and bring a demonstrated commitment to serving low-income populations and advancing equity. The role supports flexible hybrid-remote work and requires ability to travel across the service area.
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) and admitted to the practice of law in the State of New York or eligible for admission
- Minimum 7 years of post-admission legal experience
- Willingness and ability to travel throughout the service area
- Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills
- Experience initiating affirmative litigation in state and/or federal court
- Courtroom experience in civil litigation matters
- Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income populations, social justice and equity
- Training or experience with community lawyering or community organizing with strong listening and relationship-building skills
- Experience, creativity, and willingness to use varied legal and non-legal advocacy tools to advance community-identified initiatives
- New York State Resident with reliable transportation
