Job Summary
Decontaminate, assemble, wrap, and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment while adhering to AAMI, ANSI, and infection control standards. Independently follow cleaning checklists, initiate restocking, and maintain a clean, safe environment. Float between decontamination and sterile processing areas to support operating room staff and manage department inventory. Collaborate with other disciplines to ensure smooth surgical flow, report occurrences through established processes, and foster self-development by serving as a preceptor. Participate in continuing education to meet departmental requirements and manage resources efficiently.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma/GED or equivalent
- Ability to comply with company policies, procedures, practices and business ethics guidelines
- Ability to complete job required training
- Ability to comply with all applicable laws and regulations, (e.g. HIPAA, Stark, OSHA, employment laws, etc.)
- Ability to demonstrate prompt and reliable attendance
- Ability to work in the surgery center during business hours
- Ability to travel independently throughout the surgery center
- Ability to work at an efficient and productive pace, handle interruptions appropriately and meet deadlines
- Ability to communicate and interact in a respectful and professional manner
- Ability to prioritize workload while being flexible to meet the expectations of the daily operations
- Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
- Ability to understand and execute a variety of instructions
- Ability to effectively operate equipment and communicate on and operate the phone system
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to travel to other work locations, if required
- Ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds independently and occasionally up to 100 pounds with assistance
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move continuously throughout the shift
- Ability to frequently perform physical activities such as pushing, pulling, and reaching
- Visual acuity to read electronic and paper documents
- Auditory ability to participate in phone or video calls clearly
- Manual dexterity to operate standard office equipment (e.g., computer, phone, printer)
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge of processes, procedures, quality assurance, chemicals and medical instruments sufficient to be able to decontaminate, assemble, wrap, and sterilize equipment, supplies, and instruments
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge of equipment function sufficient to be able to determine operational adequacy and to distinguish between operator error and equipment malfunction
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge of applicable sanitary, infection control and safety standards sufficient to be able to perform all assignments within the safety parameters
- Ability to independently follow all cleaning checklists thoroughly and appropriately
- Ability to initiate cleaning and restocking of all work areas and ordering supplies as necessary
- Ability to float readily between all areas of decontamination and sterile processing, providing help as needed
- Ability to maintain communication with operating room staff
- Ability to apply principles of aseptic technique, standard and transmission precautions
- Ability to assist in the procurement and maintenance of department inventory
- Ability to maintain a clean and safe environment
- Ability to maintain knowledge of all applicable regulatory standards, including but not limited to AAMI and ANSI standards
- Ability to collaborate with other disciplines to maximize patient outcomes and ensure a smooth flow of the surgical experience
- Ability to account for reporting occurrences through the center's established reporting process related to employee and/or patient/visitor events
- Ability to foster the developmental and educational process of self, colleagues, orientees and students (includes functioning as a preceptor)
- Ability to participate in acceptable continuing education, fostering career and skill development including meeting departmental continuing education requirements
- Ability to assist in managing controllable costs by the proper, non-wasteful use of surgery center resources
- Ability to effectively operate equipment and communicate on and operate the phone system
Desired Qualifications
- Sterile Processing Tech certification preferred
- Instrument processing/Sterile processing experience preferred
