Sterile Processing Technician

Job Summary

Conduct surgical instrument processing, sterilization, and biological monitoring while maintaining sterile supplies and equipment inventory. Perform biological and air removal testing, record results, and assemble instruments into sets according to defined components. Manage supply levels by checking stock, rotating items, and submitting orders for shortages to the Nurse Manager. Clean, lubricate, disinfect, and reprocess dirty instruments from operating rooms in a timely manner. Adhere to infection control precautions, safety protocols, and hazardous material identification procedures. Assist with room turnover and case scheduling while maintaining a clean, organized work area. Submit documentation for certifications, incident reports, and equipment malfunctions promptly.

Required Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Instrument technician experience, 2 years or equivalent experience in hospital materials management department
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification
  • Knowledge of standard precautions, aseptic technique and principles of sterilization and instrument handling
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Demonstrates the ability to utilize recognized channels of communication
  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients, coworkers, and other health team members
