Job Summary

Conduct daily decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, and sterilization of reusable surgical instruments while operating processing equipment and monitoring safety protocols. Deliver scheduled and non-scheduled case carts to the Surgery Department, manage inventory of supplies and instrumentation, and perform dispatch duties to maintain consistent throughput. Assist callers with obtaining items, keep the department organized and fully stocked, and provide preceptor support to new employees. Adhere to AAMI, AORN, and CDC guidelines for sterile storage and delivery of surgical instrumentation.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrates an understanding of policies, procedures and regulatory requirements
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to handle and decontamination of soiled instrument
  • Ability to inspect, assemble, package and sterilize reusable instruments
  • Knowledge of equipment and chemicals used in reprocessing reusable instruments and equipment
  • Knowledge of standards and procedures associated with the preparation, sterilization, storage, and delivery of surgical instrumentation per Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) Associates of perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN), and CDC guidelines
  • Ability to answer telephone promptly
  • Ability to assemble supplies and place into case carts
  • Ability to deliver sterile and non-sterile instrumentation, supplies and equipment
  • Ability to inventory and deliver back-up case carts
  • Ability to maintain responsibility for returned instrumentation and supplies
  • Ability to perform cleaning and decontamination duties
  • Ability to operate all processing equipment used within the department
  • Ability to perform sterilization and all associated monitoring activities
  • Ability to observe all safety and security procedures
  • Ability to report potential unsafe conditions
  • Ability to use equipment and materials properly
  • Ability to keep department organized, neat, clean, and fully stocked
  • Ability to provide quality customer service
  • Ability to act as a preceptor for new employees
  • Ability to perform duties in a safe manner
  • Ability to prioritize work and focus on consistent throughput
  • Ability to perform dispatch duties
  • Ability to display behavior consistent with a thorough understanding of the SPD Mission, Vision, and Values
  • Ability to maintain compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct
