Job Summary
Statewide Independent Living Council established within the Government of the District of Columbia to collaborate with the Rehabilitation Services Administration of the DC Department of Human Services, ensuring participation of District citizens with disabilities in planning and development of vocational rehabilitation and independent living services; responsibilities include developing the State Plan, monitoring implementation, coordinating with related councils, submitting reports, ensuring open meetings, evaluating service delivery, holding public hearings, and performing duties consistent with Title VII of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as amended; composition requires at least 25 members including individuals with disabilities, a director and representatives of centers for independent living, parents/guardians of individuals with disabilities, disability advocates, representatives from private service providers, and ex officio, nonvoting members from RSA and other state agencies; terms are three years for most members with staggered appointment structure, and a chairperson will be selected from among the membership.
Required Qualifications
- Experience or involvement with disability advocacy or organizations
- Ability to participate in the planning and development of vocational rehabilitation and independent living services
- Wamiliarity with governance, public meetings, and reporting requirements under federal law (Rehabilitation Act)
- Ability to coordinate activities with other councils and state agencies
- Commitment to open meetings and public access to records
- Appointment to three-year terms with designation of terms as described in the order
