Staff / Principal Software Engineer – 5G Standalone Core

Job Summary
Architect, design, and build AI-agentic workflow software components in C++, Go, or Java for emnify's cloud-native 5G Standalone core, implementing network functions and service-based interfaces. Own end-to-end 5G roaming scenarios by designing signaling and interworking to maintain IoT connectivity across borders. Deploy and operate the 5G core at scale on AWS and Kubernetes, ensuring high availability, observability, and performance. Troubleshoot complex live telecommunications issues across the stack from core protocols to running services. Set technical direction by mentoring engineers, reviewing designs, and driving decisions on protocols and architecture. This hybrid role is based in Berlin for the Core Network team, which powers global IoT connectivity for 180+ countries.
Required Qualifications
- Staff / Principal engineer with deep 5G SA expertise
- Hands-on 5G SA expert
- Technical ownership of the core network functions and roaming scenarios
- Hands-on experience with 5G RAN technologies is not a requirement
- Deep, hands-on expertise with the 5G Standalone core
- Core specifications and core signalling protocols (e.g. service-based interfaces over HTTP/2, Diameter, GTP-C/U)
- Roaming scenarios
- Core network protocols
- Network functions (NFs)
- Hands-on experience with 5G RAN technologies is not a requirement
- Experience with cloud-native networking, service mesh, and observability for high-throughput distributed systems
- Hands-on software engineering
- Architect/design, implement, test, and troubleshoot software components using AI-agentic workflows
- Strong software development experience in at least one of C++, Go, or Java
- Results-oriented mindset
- Readiness to work across the technology stack when needed
- Experience with large-scale infrastructure deployment and orchestration

- Proven experience running telecommunications services at scale in production
