Staff Inspector (Organic Certifiers)

Job Summary

Coordinate field and remote desk audits to assess compliance with National Organic Program regulations for initial, annual, and unannounced inspections. Schedule operations, collect samples for laboratory testing, interview personnel, and review records to document findings in required reports. Submit all assignment documents by due dates and maintain effective communication with supervisors, clients, and colleagues. Complete a minimum of 150 assignments annually while participating in witness audits and peer evaluations. Support the department through policy reviews, training material development, and quarterly feedback delivery. Maintain current NOP regulatory knowledge and complete assigned trainings to uphold inspector qualifications.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in agriculture, food science, environmental science, quality management, or related field (or equivalent practical experience)
  • Minimum of 2,000 hours (1 year) of experience relevant to the scope and complexity of operations they will inspect
  • Comprehension of NOP regulations (7 CFR Part 205), the NOP Handbook, and the National List
  • Documentation of sufficient training to demonstrate relevant knowledge, skills, and experience required to inspect operations of the scope and complexity assigned and to evaluate compliance with applicable regulations
  • Excellent analytical and report-writing skills
  • Strong interpersonal abilities for interviewing and relationship-building
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Willingness and ability to travel
  • Computer literacy (able to use electronic inspection platforms, GPS, digital photography)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation
  • Initial basic training on policies, forms, files, web-system, etc.
  • Standards training as appropriate (NOP, etc.)
  • Inspection experience must be accompanied by at least 50 hours of training prior to performing inspections independently if less than one year of inspection experience
  • Attendance of Annual OC Meetings and Quarterly Trainings
  • Attendance of any additional trainings as deemed necessary
