Staff Fullstack Engineer, Backend Focus (Wandy)
Remote
Job Summary
Own backend architecture end to end for a greenfield product: design services, data models, and APIs from scratch, then build them. Design data structures and system architecture for a customer-facing product built to scale, focusing on performance and reliability. Build and maintain backend services and APIs using Go and Node.js, while contributing to the front-end as needed since every engineer ships across the stack. Take true end-to-end ownership by proposing approaches, defending them, and executing without waiting for pre-set direction. Operate comfortably within a fully AI-driven workflow using tools like Claude Code as a core part of your shipping process.
Required Qualifications
- Strong backend fundamentals: databases, data structures, async programming, and system design, with the ability to make real architectural calls rather than implement someone else's design
- Comfortable across the stack: solid front-end ability, even with backend as your focus, so you can ship a feature end to end
- Real product sense: ideally built for real end users on a genuine customer-facing (B2C) product, with an understanding of how internet products actually work, not internal or B2B tooling only
- Technology agnostic: you've worked across multiple stacks before and can pick up whatever this team needs. We care about your track record more than your specific stack
- Genuine ownership: a history of starting things from zero, not just delivering on initiatives someone else already scoped
- Startup experience, ideally somewhere genuinely chaotic: comfortable with shifting priorities and ambiguous ownership. If you've only worked inside companies with clean roadmaps and clearly defined scope, this probably isn't the right fit
- Heavy, real fluency with AI coding tools (e.g. Claude Code): you build with AI as a core part of your workflow, not an occasional assist
Desired Qualifications
- Experience at a startup where you had to build something from scratch with little existing structure to lean on
- Deep backend build experience (e.g. Go, Node.js, or similar), designing and scaling services and data layers
- Comfortable on a small, high-caliber team with little process, ready to make architectural calls without a lot of hand-holding
- Front-end depth on a customer-facing product, so you can flex toward the UI when the team needs it
