Job Summary
Staff Engineer leads the backend systems powering athlete-facing features at Strava, acts as tech lead for a pod of engineers, and designs, builds, and ships scalable backend services across the stack. Partner with product managers and designers to take features from idea to production, mentor engineers, and own the technical direction for the pod. Works across the Strava backend stack (Ruby, Scala, Go, MySQL, Redis, Cassandra) and associated technologies (Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS) with a focus on reliability, performance, and maintainability to deliver consumer-facing features at scale.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of professional backend/server engineering experience
- Experience acting as a tech lead
- Proficiency in at least one backend language (Scala, Go, Python) and willingness to work across the stack
- Experience with distributed systems technologies like Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, and AWS
- Experience with relational and NoSQL databases (MySQL, Redis, Cassandra)
- Strong system design skills for distributed systems at scale
- Ability to ship features from 0→1 and deliver real product impact
- Willingness to work across the backend stack and with product/design partners
