Job Summary
Scale up electrode and cell lines from prototype to NPI by defining and executing comprehensive experiments in multilayer pouch full cells to validate performance and safety. Drive cross-functional technical alignment by bridging gaps between internal stakeholders and external partners while establishing failure analysis protocols for small pouch full, prototype, and mass production cells. Apply advanced data analysis, statistical methods, and modeling techniques to interpret test results, predict performance, and inform design iterations. Translate electrode and cell design learnings from multilayer pouch cells into other cell form factors through modeling and practical considerations. Accelerate learning cycles by developing new techniques or test methods to detect downstream challenges early. Up to 25% domestic and international travel required.
Required Qualifications
- Experience in pilot scale electrode scale up and cell design
- Familiarity with failure mechanisms
- Strong technical background
- Experience with lithium-ion batteries
- Experience with different process steps (slurry, coating, cell design and cell tear down)
- Exceptional communication abilities with both internal groups and external customers
- Proficiency in using databases
- Proficiency in using data analysis tools such as JMP, Python, etc.
- Ability to carefully plan and implement multiple projects simultaneously
- Well-organized and data-driven approach to problem solving and experimental design
- Driven by curiosity and attention to detail
- Understanding of lab safety best practices
- At least a B.S. in engineering or science
- 7+ years of experience in batteries or related field
- Up to 25% domestic and international travel
- (As needed) Pass a respirator fit test
- Ability to wear respiratory protection
- Wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and steel toe safety shoes
Desired Qualifications
- Mandarin / Korean / Japanese language fluency
- Knowledge and experience of different form factors
- Experience translating electrode and cell design learnings from multilayer pouch cells into other cell form factors through modeling and other practical considerations
- Experience driving cross-functional technical alignment by bridging gaps between different stakeholders at Sila and external partners and customers
- Experience establishing and driving failure analysis in small pouch full, prototype and mass production cells to identify root causes
- Experience applying advanced data analysis, statistical methods, and modeling techniques to interpret test results, predict performance, and inform design iterations
- Experience effectively communicating ideas, plans, and results to internal stakeholders and supporting customer-facing data package preparation
- Experience accelerating learning cycles by developing new techniques or test methods to detect downstream challenges early in the development
- Experience helping deploy the next generation of lithium-ion batteries in industrial devices
- Experience working across technical teams and consulting with business partners to design experiments, analyze data, and create robust plans to meet goals and support internal customer programs
- Experience effectively prioritizing work to meet program objectives
- Experience being hands-on in the laboratory
- Experience being data-driven
- Experience being curious and enjoying fast-paced learning with multiple projects
- Experience being an experienced, hands-on, team-oriented engineer
- Experience having a desire to help launch commercial products
- Experience having a desire to help deploy the next generation of lithium-ion batteries in industrial devices
