Job Summary
Staff Attorney for the Matrimonial Project within NYLAG's Domestic Violence Law Unit (DVLU) providing safety planning, comprehensive representation, and advocacy to survivors of intimate partner violence on matrimonial matters (divorce, order of protection, custody/visitation, support, equitable distribution) and related immigration applications (VAWA self-petitions, U/T visas, adjustment of status). Represent clients in Supreme and Family Courts across NYC with a focus on Manhattan; collaborate with partners, mentors, and pro bono attorneys; conduct legal screenings, clinics, outreach, trainings, and community education; perform administrative duties including case management and grant reporting; travel within NYC for court appearances and partner-site engagements. Requires NYS Bar admission, 1-3 years of litigation experience in family/matrimonial law, and a commitment to trauma-informed, survivor-centered representation. NYLAG supports a hybrid work policy with in-person requirements at least two days per week.
Required Qualifications
- Admission to New York State Bar
- 1-3 years of litigation experience in family and/or matrimonial law preferred
- 1-3 years of experience working with survivors of intimate partner violence preferred
- Fluency in a second language preferred
- Excellent litigation, advocacy, written and oral communication skills
- Experience working with survivors of trauma, people experiencing poverty, and underserved communities preferred
- Ability to work collaboratively, manage multiple tasks, and solve problems
- Demonstrated commitment to gender, racial, and social justice
