Job Summary
The Staff Attorney for the Immigration Law Project is responsible for providing direct legal services, including consultations and representation before USCIS and the Executive Office for Immigration Review. This role involves conducting trainings for various audiences on immigration law and collaborating with organizations aligned with ILP’s mission. Essential qualifications include a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree, Bar admission, and at least 2 years of related experience, particularly with USCIS applications and Immigration Courts. Strong communication skills, both oral and written, are crucial, alongside problem-solving and organizational abilities. Fluency in Spanish is required.
Required Qualifications
- Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from an accredited law school
- Admitted to the Bar
- At least 2 years of related experience
- Expertise in representing clients in affirmative applications before USCIS and in removal proceedings
- Prior experience in issues affecting survivors of domestic violence, crime, abuse, torture, and persecution
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to write routine reports, court documents, case notes, pleadings, and correspondence
- Creative and critical thinking skills
- Experience organizing and executing group trainings
- Familiarity with legal services and resources in New York City
- Knowledge of economic issues facing domestic violence victims
Desired Qualifications
- Fluency in Spanish
- Strong networking skills
- Ability to develop and maintain relationships with individuals, organizations, and government agencies
- Experience litigating in the federal courts
