Job Summary
Staff Attorney for Criminal Defense Practice in Still She Rises, Inc., focusing on indigent defense for women and families in the Tulsa area. Responsibilities include zealously advocating for individuals charged with misdemeanor and felony offenses in Tulsa Criminal Courts; appearing in arraignments, hearings, and trials; providing comprehensive representation in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams; co-counseling cases in Juvenile Court or Civil Court as needed; and engaging in negotiations with judges, prosecutors, and other actors within the system. Requires a J.D. from an ABA-accredited school, Oklahoma bar admission (or reciprocity), and a minimum of 3 years of criminal defense experience; strong research, writing, and courtroom advocacy skills; ability to work collaboratively with diverse communities and in interdisciplinary teams; and a commitment to defending indigent individuals in North Tulsa through all juvenile abuse, neglect, and dependency proceedings.
Required Qualifications
- At least 3 years of practice experience in criminal defense
- J.D. from an American Bar Association accredited law school
- Membership in good standing to the Oklahoma bar or eligibility for admission to the Oklahoma Bar via reciprocity admission on motion (requires continuous practice of law for at least three years of the five years immediately preceding application for admission)
- Ability to defend indigent individuals in the North Tulsa community charged with criminal offenses
- Excellent research, writing and courtroom advocacy skills
- Ability to think critically and quickly on their feet
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to litigate and confidently engage in skillful negotiations with judges, prosecutors, and other actors within the systems our clients navigate
- Experience and interest in working in and with racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities
- A commitment to defending indigent individuals in the North Tulsa community throughout at all stages of juvenile abuse, neglect, and dependency proceedings
