Job Summary
Staff Attorney provides legal representation and advocacy across civil-law topics (family law, immigration, housing, public benefits, employment) to patients served under grant-funded programs, with focus on marginalized communities. Responsibilities include offering counsel and representation at hearings or courts, collaborating with social service teams to deliver comprehensive care, assisting with discharge upgrades and related legal needs, handling parentage/child or spousal support matters, conducting outreach to St. John’s patient communities, drafting filings, attending meetings with partners and advocacy organizations, and tracking grant-related activities. Requires JD, California Bar admission, ability to travel for outreach, strong trauma-informed understanding, bilingual capability preferred, and commitment to public-interest service; proficiency in legal research, document preparation, and case management software; experience with underserved populations and community resources. Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
- Admission to the California State Bar and in good standing
- Fluency in Spanish is ideal but not essential
- Strong knowledge of trauma-informed care to address the needs of vulnerable populations
- Experience in Family Law, DVROs, CHROs, Immigration Law
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Commitment to public interest law and serving vulnerable populations
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with diverse populations
- Empathy and compassion for individuals facing legal challenges
- Flexibility to travel to outreach locations and work evenings or weekends
- Proficiency in legal research, document preparation, and case management software
- Knowledge of community resources and experience in community outreach
- Experience with underserved communities such as undocumented workers, LGBT populations, youth, homelessness, substance abuse, and mental illness
