Job Summary
Teacher Assistant position at Antigonish Education Centre under SRCE (CUPE Local 955). Responsibilities include assisting the supervising teacher and school team with personal care (feeding, toileting, hygiene), administering medication under policy, helping students move and participate in activities per IPP/therapy plans, supervising for safety, operating and supporting equipment, promoting emotional well-being and independence, implementing behavior management plans, and supporting instructional programs. Requires High School Diploma or equivalent and teacher assistant training; CPR and First Aid certified or willing to obtain; NVCI certification desirable; bilingual English & French; experience with assistive technology and managing students with exceptional needs is a plus. Includes community work placements support and collaboration with teachers for program delivery; probationary/term hourly as a contracted position. Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Teacher assistant training through a recognized diploma or certificate program, or an equivalent training program (i.e. - CCA, LPN)
- A school practicum which was organized by the institution of the diploma program, or the equivalent in personal care experience working in a residential group home setting or personal care setting
- Ability to perform all the duties of this job, including the personal and physical care of students
- Current certification in CPR and First Aid or willing to obtain prior to employment
- Current Non-violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) certification (desirable)
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Education and training in the use of assistive technology, including computers (desirable)
- Experience and demonstrated ability in managing children or youth with exceptional needs
- Bilingual - English & French
