Job Summary
Sr Principal Engineer – Tunnels SME leads design, construction, quality management, commissioning, operation, inspection, and maintenance of railroad tunnels and overbuild structures. Oversees compliance with Amtrak standards, reviews project designs, and collaborates with internal teams, engineering firms, contractors, and external stakeholders (including FRA, FTA, and real estate). Provides mentorship, supports safety, sustainability, resiliency, and customer experience, and manages design efforts and consultants from inception through completion. Requires expertise in tunnel construction methods (TBM, SEM, drill-and-blast, cut-and-cover), geotechnical engineering (GBRs), and integration with rail operations, track, electrification, and stations. Strong ability to communicate, coordinate, and deliver across multiple projects with diverse contracting strategies (DBB, DB, CMAR). Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s Degree and 9 years of relevant experience; 11+ years preferred; Professional Engineer or Geologist license in Northeast Corridor states and graduate degree are a plus.
