Sr Opto-mechanical Design Engineer

Job Summary

Drive the complete opto-mechanical design process from requirements specification through detailed design and release to manufacturing. Develop and track cost and schedule while generating detailed 3D solid modeling (Creo) models and drawings. Conduct fluid, thermal, and vibrational analyses using hand calculations and FEA modeling, applying Geometric Tolerancing and tolerance stack-up analysis. Lead design reviews to obtain peer-oriented assessments, procure and test prototypes, and create assembly and test procedures. Support system integration, testing, and handoff to manufacturing for precision mechanisms operating in ultra-clean environments and vacuum.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Minimum 3 years work experience in 3D solid modeling
  • Minimum 1 years work experience in FEA, GD&T
  • Strong background in the design of mechanisms
  • Basic understanding of optical subsystems
  • Familiar with manufacturing processes including machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding fabrication and castings
  • Doctorate (Academic) Degree and 0 years related work experience
  • Master's Level Degree and related work experience of 3 years
  • Bachelor's Level Degree and related work experience of 5 years

  • Drive design from beginning to end including requirements specification, feasibility studies, conceptual and detailed design, build and release to manufacturing
  • Develop and track cost and schedule
  • Generate detailed models and drawings, using 3D solid modeling (Creo)
  • Conduct various analysis, such as fluid, thermal, and vibrational, through both hand calcs and FEA modeling
  • Perform detailed tolerance stack-up analysis
  • Participate in and lead design reviews to obtain a peer-oriented design assessment throughout design process
  • Procure, assemble, and test prototype material
  • Support system integration and testing
  • Create assembly and test procedures
  • Generate documentation and support release and handoff to manufacturing
  • Design challenges may include: Low stress and high stability optomechanical & precision mechanism design
  • Design for functionality in ultra-clean environments, including in vacuum
  • Precision stage and actuation/adjustment design
