Job Summary
Coordinate clinical competency in the blood bank section and perform routine and special laboratory tests while resolving day-to-day technical problems. Maintain regulatory compliance, monitor performance improvement and quality control activities, and assist the supervisor in ensuring section standards meet accrediting agency requirements. Manage laboratory operations to ensure reliable patient testing and timely services, adapting communication styles to specific patient populations and maintaining confidentiality of patient information.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in medical technology, medical laboratory science, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical or biological science
- 4 years experience (one year of which is in the appropriate clinical lab section) in appropriate clinical lab under a qualified Director
- Current license in the state of practice (if applicable)
- ASCP, AMT or AAB certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist
- Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information
- Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally
- Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to and experience working in controlled environment, following safety measures to minimize exposure to chemicals, body fluids, blood borne pathogens, etc
- Advanced analytical skills to collect data, perform calculations, maintains system logs and operates laboratory computer equipment
- Judgmental skills in order to identify and solve problems as well as handle difficult situations
- Skills to manage stress in order to maintain a professional atmosphere and provide quality service
- Skills to work independently
- Must be able to lift 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly
- Must be able to work in an area where patients enter; works directly with patients; and/or works with specimens that could contain diseases
- Must be able to handle exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue
- Must be able to handle exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment
Desired Qualifications
- Experience including advanced analytical skills necessary in order to analyze complex data and trouble shoot equipment
