Sr. Mechanical Engineer - Closures Mechanisms

Job Summary

Lead collaborative development of closure mechanisms including handles, actuators, latches, and regulators while managing component release from concept design through production support. Drive smooth product implementation supporting manufacturing engineering from early builds until SOP plus 90 days, overseeing supplier engagement, BOM management, and validation testing. Champion 1st principles design methodology to balance aesthetics with elite mechanical performance, ensuring accurate cost and weight forecasting across the entire lifecycle. Mentor less experienced engineers and represent the department during body design reviews. Coordinate supplier meetings to investigate and resolve design issues, utilizing Catia V6 and Enovia PLM for system information management.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineer or related discipline
  • 5+ years' experience in automotive closures development or equivalent industry experience
  • Understanding of product requirements and closures features
  • Knowledge of Structures – Hoods, Doors, Tailgate
  • Knowledge of lightweight systems (aluminum or composite) with knowledge of hinges and kinematic requirements
  • Knowledge of Seals – Dynamic Sealing, Glass Runs, Finishers
  • Knowledge of Mechanisms – Handles, Latches, Actuators, Regulators
  • Strong understanding of the 1st principle physics of a closures system
  • Knowledge of the loads, forces, and overall function of the system
  • Knowledge of the tradeoffs among design, package, function, and customer experience
  • Ability to self-direct, self-managing issues to closure involving all necessary teams
  • Ability to adapt quickly to program changes
  • CAD design experience for closures systems, mechanisms, structures, or related vehicle components
  • Experience on leverage and usage of CAE results
  • CAE operational knowledge
  • Knowledge of an automotive design and development process
  • Knowledge of system requirements
  • Knowledge of general engineering best practices
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • High level of integrity
  • Ability to deliver under pressure
  • Ability to manage component design & development within cost, weight, and timing constraints
  • Willingness to travel to suppliers, manufacturing, and testing facilities as required throughout product development

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree
  • 5+ years' experience (Preferred) in automotive closures development or equivalent industry experience
  • Catia V6 experience
  • Experience on leverage and usage of CAE results
  • CAE operational knowledge
