Sr Manager, Software Development Engineering (Java Fullstack)

Job Summary
Lead the design and delivery of full-stack software capabilities for investment research initiatives, setting technical direction while remaining hands-on across design, development, and support. Partner with product owners, researchers, architects, and engineering leaders to translate business strategy into technical roadmaps and clear delivery plans. Own the architecture for cloud-ready, event-driven services and integration patterns, driving scalability, reliability, and reuse across the broader platform. Champion engineering excellence through clean code, automated testing, observability, and secure-by-design delivery standards. Advance the team's delivery model by maturing CI/CD workflows and DevOps practices to improve quality and speed to production. Lead the resolution of complex production and integration issues, and drive long-term resiliency and operational improvements. Grow and develop engineers through coaching, mentoring, feedback, and inclusive collaboration, building team capability and technical depth at scale. Set direction with ownership and transparency, communicating priorities, tradeoffs, risks, and progress to technical and senior business stakeholders. Drive modernization initiatives that improve user experience and align teams to evolving architecture standards. Establish responsible use of approved Generative AI capabilities to improve developer productivity and code quality, within enterprise governance, security, and compliance expectations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
- 7+ years of experience developing production-grade applications using Java (Spring Boot) and Python, including senior technical leadership on complex initiatives
- Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership across teams—setting architecture direction, driving technical decisions, and mentoring engineers
- Demonstrated ability to build cloud-ready, event-driven microservices and APIs at scale using common messaging patterns (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ) and RESTful services
- Proven experience designing and building hybrid on-premises and cloud integrations
- Strong working knowledge of SQL (e.g., PostgreSQL) and NoSQL technologies (e.g., MongoDB, DynamoDB, Bigtable), and sound judgment on when to apply each
- Interest to work with financial datasets and partner effectively on data engineering workflows and analytics use cases
- Hands-on experience using CI/CD and container-based delivery practices (e.g., GitHub CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, Bamboo/Jenkins)
- Working knowledge of secure coding and code quality practices using common analysis tools (e.g., SonarQube, CodeQL, Veracode)
- Demonstrated skill in designing maintainable solutions using established engineering standards (e.g., SOLID principles, 12-Factor App), appropriate data structures, algorithms, and modern design patterns
Desired Qualifications
- Experience modernizing data platforms or research technology in a regulated industry (financial services is a plus)
- Familiarity with rules engines (e.g., Drools) and data lake patterns for large-scale time series datasets
- Working familiarity with investment research, asset management, or another regulated financial data domain (e.g., risk, compliance, or regulatory reporting workflows)
- Experience collaborating with quantitative partners to enable or operationalize models (Python or R)
- Demonstrated ability to balance near-term delivery with longer-term architecture evolution and platform scalability
- Experience building data visualizations or dashboards using Python-based tooling (e.g., Plotly Dash or similar)
- Strong prioritization and communication skills, including comfort explaining complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
- A continuous improvement mindset—bringing ideas that strengthen team delivery, quality, and collaboration
- Experience leading cross-team technical initiatives or influencing engineering practices beyond a single team
