Sr. Communications Manager - Science Media Relations

Job Summary
Implement multi-year strategic communication plans to promote scientific manuscripts, abstracts, and clinical guidelines across the American Heart Association's 14 peer-reviewed journals and scientific meetings. Develop news releases, media pitches, and multimedia assets to translate complex research for journalists and the public, while securing earned media coverage and cultivating relationships with reporters. Lead development of news kits for major scientific events, including video interviews, talking points, and infographics, and mentor up to two team members. Collaborate with internal science and marketing teams to amplify the Association's mission and monitor media landscapes to protect reputation during breaking news.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Communications or equivalent experience
- Five (5) years of excellent writing and editing skills, translating scientific research for the public, and solid knowledge of AP Style
- Five (5) years of managing the submission of press, promotional, or related content, building relationships with journalists, and securing quality earned media coverage
- Five (5) years of proficient computer skills, including all Microsoft Office programs, especially Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
- Five (5) years of project management experience, including managing multiple projects concurrently
- Five (5) years of demonstrated ability to work under tight deadlines, while facing competing demands and priorities for multiple projects
Desired Qualifications
- Eight (8) years of relevant experience
- At least three (3) years of experience in a successful supervisory role
- Proven ability to review and translate scientific abstracts and manuscripts; develop newsworthy ideas and approaches; write and pitch stories to media outlets; manage media interviews and produce news conferences, including prepping research authors and experts; craft talking points and/or key messages; foster collaborative relationships with reporters that position the organization as a primary resource for their stories
- Portfolio demonstrating successful expertise in developing and implementing multi-faceted media strategies that generate visibility for scientific publications, journals, and scientific meetings
