Job Summary
Senior-level Sr. Chemist position at e.l.f. Beauty’s rhode brand, based in Santa Monica, CA. The role focuses on independent formulation project work for personal care products, including creating and revising formulas based on product briefs, batching formulations, adjusting batches to meet specs, maintaining accurate records, preparing samples for submission, calculating specifications and CofAs, conducting stability testing, ordering materials, maintaining storage and documentation, using formulation software, and supervising scale-up batches at contract manufacturers. The candidate will calibrate lab equipment, participate in cross-functional communication with Product Development, Operations, Quality, and Regulatory teams, and travel to vendor sites as needed. Requirements include a Bachelor’s in Science in Chemistry or related field, 5+ years of bench/formulation experience in personal care, experience with GMP, key lab equipment, and proficiency with formulation databases, along with strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills and willingness to travel. Office location is Santa Monica, CA with an in-lab work schedule (5 days in the lab). Budgeted salary range is 105K-140K.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s in Science in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or equivalent
- 5+ years’ experience as a formulation/bench chemist in a personal care formulation laboratory
- Experience using mixers, homogenizers, viscometers, and pH meters
- Strong knowledge of raw materials used in personal care formulations
- Ingredient listing
- Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
- Experience maintaining a formulation software or database (formula breakdown, CAS, INCI, cost information)
- Experience using Microsoft Office or Google Workspace
- Highly organized, detail oriented, and able to independently manage multiple priority projects
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Willing to travel to contract manufacturers and supervise scale-up batches
