Job Summary
Senior Applications Developer to support the National Weather Service AWIPS environment, focusing on cloud-native web-based meteorological visualization tools in AWS. Responsibilities include designing and building complex web components with JavaScript/TypeScript, architecting high-performance meteorological data visualizations, leading feature implementations (multi-layer maps, real-time data visualization), developing backend services and APIs, data processing pipelines for large datasets, establishing coding standards, mentoring junior developers, collaborating with meteorologists and UX designers, and contributing to architectural decisions. Strong emphasis on frontend web technologies, geospatial visualization, WebGL/Canvas, RESTful APIs, and AWS serverless/microservices. Preferred experience with meteorological visualization, WebGL/Three.js/D3.js, GRIB/NetCDF data formats, real-time data streaming, and AWS certifications; role includes hybrid on-site in Silver Spring, MD and remote work.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional web application development experience
- Advanced knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript and modern frontend frameworks (React, Angular, or Vue.js)
- Demonstrated experience building complex, data-intensive web applications
- Experience with microservices-driven architecture in AWS
- Strong expertise in web application architecture and design patterns
- Experience with geospatial data visualization or interactive mapping applications
- Knowledge of RESTful API design and backend service development
- Experience with AWS cloud services and serverless architecture
- Strong understanding of performance optimization for web applications
- Experience leveraging Generative AI development tools to accelerate and assist in the development process
- Knowledge of best practices in GenAI prompting, development, and reviewing generated content
